Belilena Cave Expedition

Experience the Thrill of Sri Lanka’s Most Popular River Adventure

Belilena Cave (also called Beli Lena) is an extraordinary prehistoric cave and archaeological reserve located about 8 km from Kitulgala town in Sri Lanka’s Sabaragamuwa Province. It’s one of the island’s most significant ancient human sites, revealing evidence of habitation dating back as far as 30,000 years or more.

Ancient Human History:

Excavations conducted by the Sri Lankan Archaeological Department uncovered skeletal remains and tools linked to early humans known as Balangoda Man (Homo sapiens balangodensis), with artifacts dating from roughly 30,000 to 9,000 years ago.

Archaeological Importance:

Bone tools, stone implements, and signs of early fire use place Belilena among South Asia’s oldest known prehistoric sites.

Protected Reserve:

The site is officially designated an Archaeological Reserve, meaning exploration supports preservation and is typically done with local guides.

What to Expect

A Belilena Expedition isn’t just a nature walk or cave visit and it’s a journey through ancient human history, a rainforest trek, and an immersive adventure all in one, perfect for travelers interested in heritage, photography, and the natural world.
